Wildfires followed by heavy rain sparked flash flooding and mudslides in Washington state, sending homeowners packing but trapping motorists in their vehicles.
Nobody was reported injured, however, The Associated Press reported.
Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said “a couple” of homes at least have been damaged and deputies were still trying to reach the residences to offer aid, AP reported. Between five and 12 vehicles were left stranded by the mudslides on one particular patch of Highway 153, AP reported.
And another eight-mile stretch of the same highway was completely blocked from the mud. Likewise, for a 25-mile portion of State Highway 20, emergency responders reported.
Wildfires have been burning across more than 400 square miles in Carlton Complex, AP reported.
