NEW YORK (AP) — A retired brigadier general who was the Army’s highest-ranking psychiatrist has been named New York City’s veterans affairs’ commissioner. She says she’ll use her expertise on post-traumatic stress disorder to serve the city’s 200,000 veterans.
The mayor introduced incoming Commissioner Dr. Loree Sutton on Monday at a City Hall news conference. She is to start her job on Sept. 2, taking over from Terrance Holliday.
Sutton calls herself “a warrior for veterans.” She says she’ll treat PTSD as an affliction on a par with physical injuries.
She retired from the Army in 2010.
Sutton acknowledged the recent nationwide problems in veterans’ medical services and says she’ll thoroughly review them in New York. But the she says she herself registered at a VA facility in Brooklyn and has been satisfied.
