Rep. James Clyburn, Democrat from South Carolina, said that if Republicans keep the majority in the House this fall, they will impeach President Obama.

Mr. Clyburn predicted the GOP course of action during a Twitter town hall, in response to a participant who asked why Democrats aren’t working harder to shield President Obama from reported impeachment threats, The Hill reported. Republicans, however, say the entire impeachment debate is a trumped-up strategy from Democrats desperate to win the House — and keep the Senate — in upcoming elections.

The tweet from LiberalPhenom raised the issue: “@Clyburn Disappointed in lack of fire frm Ds in supporting POTUS. When do Ds stand up 2 GOP? Shut down all talk of impeachment?”

Then Mr. Clyburn’s response, The Hill reported: “@LiberalPhenom No way to shut down the talk, nor should there be, it’s real and I predict if GOP maintain House, Obama will be impeached.”

Mr. Clyburn then responded to a second tweet from “LiberalPhenom” with this: “There are 234 Republicans and 199 Democrats in the House. The only thing that can stop them are electing 218 Dems on Nov. 4.”

Speaker John Boehner has said repeatedly that he’s not going to pursue an impeachment against the president and that Democrats are only using the issue to drum up election support.
