OPINION:
The Times recently ran two items about impeachment. One was former judge Andrew P. Napolitano’s op-ed, “The smoking gun of Obama’s lawlessness” (Web, Aug. 6), and the other was a cartoon showing House Speaker John A. Boehner saying (as he has in fact said), “We have no plans to impeach President Obama” and “We have nothing to gain by impeaching President Obama.” The cartoon mocks Democrats by showing a donkey in a suit saying, “Republicans continue to use the “I” word.” This cartoon not only gainsays Mr. Napolitano, it states cold facts.
As Mr. Boehner well knows, Congress would be unwise to remove the president from office. Far better to suffer the Obama we have than fly to Bidens we know not of.
Moreover, impeaching Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. would be more to the point. Mr. Holder’s lawlessness is what enables the president’s lawlessness. Once the Justice Department has a new mandate to enforce the law, this time fully in compliance with the president’s mandate and the attorney general’s oaths of office, the wrongs pointed out by Mr. Napolitano will be curtailed for the rest of the president’s term.
