A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta sold for $38 million at a Carmel, California, auction — a record-setting price for a car.
The vehicle was auctioned off at the Bonhams’ Quail Lodge Auction as part of Monterey Car Week, ABC News reported. The $38 million price tag bests the previous high sale price of $30 million, paid just last year for a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 R F1 Racer, ABC News said.
The Ferrari is rare; the company only made 39 of them.
It was originally owned by French racer Jo Schlesser and was crashed by another driver — Olympic skier Henri Oreiller — in 1962. It was ultimately returned to Ferrari for restoration, ABC News reported.
The family of the last owner — a man named Fabrizio Violati who bought it in the mid-1960s for $4,000 but died in 2010 — decided to sell the vehicle, ABC News reported.
