INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An explosion in an underground transformer has led to an evacuation of an office building and sent brownish-gray smoke billowing into the street.
The Indianapolis Fire Department says no one was hurt.
The blast about 1:30 p.m. near the Circle Centre shopping and entertainment mall frightened bystanders and brought back memories of a series of 2011 manhole explosions that brought Indianapolis Power & Light under scrutiny by state regulators.
Construction worker Bruce Plott told WIBC-FM he was working nearby and heard a sound like someone banging on aluminum garbage cans for almost 10 minutes about the time of the blast.
The Indianapolis Star reports the explosion sent about 150-200 people out of one office building.
A message seeking comment was left for an Indianapolis Power & Light spokeswoman.
