FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — A Guantanamo prisoner charged in the Sept. 11 attacks says he wants a trial separate from his four co-defendants.
Lawyers for Ramzi Binalshibh (RAM’-zee bin-al-SHEEB’) of Yemen filed the motion Wednesday morning with a war-crimes tribunal at the U.S. base in Cuba. A hearing was set for Wednesday afternoon.
Attorney James Harrington says Binalshibh wants an investigation of his alleged mistreatment by guards. He says his client thinks an investigation will happen faster if he’s alone.
The government contends that issues peculiar to Binalshibh can be resolved in a timely fashion without trying him separately.
The hearing is being shown on closed-circuit video at Fort Meade, Maryland, near Baltimore.
