The father of the 20-year-old race car driver who was struck and killed Saturday by Tony Stewart is demanding answers.
“Tony Stewart was the best damn driver by far on the track that night,” Kevin Ward Sr. told the Syracuse Post-Standard. “Why he had to go up as high as he did and hog my son, there’s no reason for it.”
Mr. Ward and his wife Pamela were at the Empire Super Sprints event in New York when their son Kevin was killed. Video showed him getting out of his car and walking onto the live track, angrily waving his arms when Mr. Stewart’s car hit him and sent him tumbling down the track. He was pronounced dead within an hour.
It was the first time the young driver had ever gotten out of his car during a race, his father said.
“Apparently, Tony Stewart was the only one driving out there who didn’t see him,” he told the Post-Standard. “The one person that knows what happened that night is possibly facing 10 years in prison. Is he going to say what he done?”
The father’s words come days after Ward’s aunt, Wendi Ward, blasted Mr. Stewart on Facebook.
“Thanks for thinking of our family Tony Stewart when you decided to be a d—k!” she wrote. “I look into the eyes of family and see a deep hurt that should not be there, my heart has pounded out of my chest for hours.”
