Truck drivers who didn’t take care while transporting two giraffes — and who allowed the beasts’ heads to slam into a cement highway overpass they were driving under — will face prosecution, animal welfare officers said.
One of the giraffes died; the other was injured, The Associated Press reported.
Rick Allen, with the animal welfare agency, said Friday that the highway accident between Pretoria and Johnnesburg was completely avoidable, AP reported. He also said charges are forthcoming against the drivers and transporters.
Pictures taken by interested observers of the transport process show that the giraffes’ heads were sticking far above the top of the truck, AP reported.
