OPINION:
There is a technical solution to Hamas’ terrorist tunnel network in Gaza (“Echoes of Vietnam: Israel surprised by Hamas’ advanced tunnel network,” Web, July 31). It’s surprising that the Israeli army hasn’t used it. It could detect and render useless the tunnels without the tragic side effects of invading Gaza. The solution: Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and appropriately designed Bangalore torpedoes.
GPR detects underground anomalies such as caves and tunnels. Used from the surface or airborne, it could detect the exit points of the Gaza terrorist tunnels in Israel. Bangalore torpedoes have been used on the surface since World War I to clear linear paths through wire and mines. Unlike submarine torpedoes, Bangalores don’t move. Fabricated with sufficiently large charges, they could be inserted underground from the GPR-located exit points in Israel to collapse the tunnels in Gaza — low-muss, low-fuss fire in the hole.
