WEST POINT, Miss. (AP) - A West Point woman has been charged with capital murder after authorities discovered her 2-month-old son died from a codeine overdose.

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott says 24-year-old Brittania Smith was arrested this week.

Scott says a report Monday from the Mississippi Crime Lab determined Brittania’s son, Brinston Smith, died from a lethal dose of codeine.

Scott says the child died on Dec. 20 at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point, where he was taken by personnel responding to a 911 call.

Scott says the codeine allegedly used in the incident was obtained through a prescription. Scott declined to comment on who the prescription was for.

Smith, who has two other young children, is currently in the county jail awaiting arraignment.
