RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Department of Transportation plans a vigil to honor workers who have been killed in work zone crashes.
The vigil will be held Wednesday night at the VDOT Workers’ Memorial along Interstate 64 on Afton Mountain. The vigil is part of a weeklong awareness campaign to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and driving recklessly through highway work zones.
Last year in Virginia, there were 21 deaths related to work zone crashes.
Besides the vigil, Gov. Terry McAuliffe will light the Executive Mansion in Richmond orange on Wednesday night. The color symbolizes “Go Orange Day” to raise awareness about work zone safety. VDOT workers will also be wearing orange to drive the message home.
