BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Agency of Transportation Secretary Brian Searles says that every year people think the potholes are the worst, but this year, they are right.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1jtRzXe ) that potholes develop when water gets trapped in crevices in roads and then freezes. That process expands and cracks the asphalt. When vehicles hit a pothole, they can increase the damage.
And driving over potholes can cause vehicle damage, including bent rims and broken tire belts.
Scott Rogers, director of operations at the Agency of Transportation, says he thinks this year will require a lot of pothole repair work. Rogers says the state has already spent $1.69 million and used 3,230 tons of patch material. Officials expect costs increase as the spring goes on.
