HONOLULU (AP) - Hawaii health department officials are investigating possible illegal dumping of toxins at an Oahu site.
Investigators are testing the corrosiveness of a white powdery substance stored on land leased by a trucking company from the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. The property is near the Kalaeloa Airport.
The calcium hydroxide - or lime - is used in construction. When left exposed to the elements and mixed with water, it becomes corrosive and can burn eyes and skin.
Hawaii News Now (https://is.gd/2O4leC) says the substance is among tons of used building materials dumped on the property leased by FCS Inc., a trucking company owned by Floyd Carns.
Carns is referring questions to the DHHL, which has declined to comment because of the investigation.
