HAMILTON, N.Y. (AP) - A New York environmental officer killed in the line of duty is being remembered 100 years after his death.

Samuel Taylor was shot on April 5, 1914 as he attempted to apprehend a duck hunter along the Mohawk River. The state Department of Environmental Conservation says 38-year-old was the first environmental officer killed in the line of duty in New York. Taylor’s official title was game protector.

Department officials will attend a graveside memorial ceremony being held Wednesday in the central New York town of Hamilton.

Taylor’s name also will be added to the fallen officer’s memorial wall near the state Capitol in Albany next month, a distinction that had earlier been denied.
