NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Bill de Blasio says New York City is “hurting” after the death of a police officer.

De Blasio praised Officer Dennis Guerra as an “exemplary” officer who was trying to “save people in need.”

The 38-year-old officer died Wednesday morning after responding to a mattress fire Sunday at a Brooklyn apartment building.

De Blasio spoke at the National Action Network’s annual conference in Manhattan. He asked for a moment of silence.

He says New Yorkers “need to appreciate” the risks Guerra, his critically injured partner Rosa Rodriguez and other first responders face.
