AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Maine House of Representatives has given initial approval to a revised version of Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s proposal to provide more money for police to combat illegal drugs that adds money for drug treatment.
The bill passed the House on Wednesday by a 124-14 vote and now moves to the Senate. It provides funding for 10 Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents, two district court judges, and two state prosecutors who would handle drug-related cases.
LePage had proposed to add 14 DEA agents, four judges and four prosecutors.
The bill also provides $750,000 to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for opiate addiction treatment.
LePage blasted lawmakers on Wednesday reducing the number of funded enforcement positions in his proposal and said he would veto the modified bill.
