WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A federal judge has ordered The University of North Carolina Wilmington to promote an associate professor who sued the school, and to pay him $50,000 in back pay.

Associate criminology professor Mike Adams sued in 2007, saying he was denied promotion to full professor. Adams said he was an atheist and when he converted to Christianity in 2000, his political and social views changed.

Adams said the university retaliated for his views by denying him a promotion in 2006. A federal jury in Greenville decided in his favor last month.

Senior U.S. District Court Judge Malcolm J. Howard ordered UNCW to promote Adams to full professor with future pay and benefits that relate back to August 2007.

UNCW has already said it will consider its options following the March decision.
