RIVERSIDE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities in western Alabama say a dog that fatally mauled a Riverside boy has been euthanized.

Bill Murray of the St. Clair Sheriff’s office told local media outlets that although the dog was euthanized, it’s unclear if authorities have decided whether the animal’s owner will face charges.

Authorities have said 5-year-old John Triton Harvard was playing in the yard with another child when the dog attacked him on Sunday.

Riverside city officials say the incident has prompted them to consider adopting a leash law to prevent similar cases from happening in the future.

Riverside is about 25 miles west of Anniston.
