NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Parole Board has granted supervised release to a Norfolk man whose parole was revoked for failing to register as a sex offender.
Monday’s vote reverses the board’s February decision to return 68-year-old Willie Jefferson Combo Jr. to prison.
The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1lHPxDH ) reports that Combs served 33 years in prison after being convicted of attempted rape in 1966. He received parole in 1999 and worked in a Richmond hospital. In 2007, he moved to Norfolk but failed to notify state police. He was convicted of failing to register in 2008 and served two years.
Last year, Combs was convicted of violating his parole by failing to register monthly.
Parole Board member Fred Quayle says he asked the board to reconsider Combo’s case after the newspaper profiled it last week.
