Celebrating UConn fans smashed window panes, broke street lights and tossed about furniture inside the campus student union facility — a violent ending to a jubilant win over Kentucky that led police to arrest dozens.
“A lot of it was alcohol-related,” said University of Connecticut spokesman Tom Breen, in The Associated Press.
But by 1:30 a.m., campus police had already made 30 arrests. State police who were called to contain the crowd said more were on the way.
The property damage was minor, and nobody was reportedly injured, AP said.
“By far, most of our students have conducted themselves safely and responsibly,” UConn Police Chief Barbara O’Connor said in the AP report.
More than 10,000 students shook and stormed the stands and arena of Gampel Pavilion after the Huskies won over Kentucky, 60-54, to secure the NCAA title — the school’s second in four years.
