Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire Democrat, said Tuesday that she’s not sure if the Senate has the votes to break a filibuster on an equal pay bill.
“We’ll see what happens,” she said on MSNBC. “I think regardless of what happens, it’s important for us to stand for the women of this country and say it’s not right to have people discriminated against.”
Tuesday is Equal Pay Day, a day raising awareness that the average woman makes less than the average man for doing the same work. A procedural vote on a equal pay bill is expected Tuesday afternoon.
Women in the Senate meet regularly on a bipartisan basis and are having a dinner together Tuesday night. When asked if the women talk about issues like equal pay, Ms. Shaheen declined to say if the GOP women are on board.
“We go by [Sen. Barbara] Mikulski’s rules, which is what’s said at the dinner, stays at the dinner,” she said.
