SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco’s ban on short-term rentals is turning out to have teeth, with people who rent out their apartments on websites like Airbnb facing fines and eviction.

The city bans all residential rentals of less than 30 days unless the host has a conditional use permit, and it applies whether paying guests visit frequently or just once a year - and whether the host owns the apartment or rent it.

The San Francisco City Planning Department says it has had a surge in complaints about the short-term rentals since 2012, and is now investigating about 85 people for breaking the rental law.

Still, the San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/PVFRtY ), the law may soon be changing.

Board of Supervisors President David Chiu has spent almost two years working on a framework for Airbnb’s operations.
