Kirsten Kukowski, press secretary for the Republican National Committee, said Tuesday that Republicans agree it’s time to solve the pay gender gap, but that passing more legislation is not the way to do it.
“We do agree there needs to be equal pay for equal work, but what the Democrats are doing here, which isn’t fair to voters across American, is not having an honest conversation,” Ms. Kukowski said on MSNBC. “It’s already illegal to discriminate, so we don’t think we need more legislation.”
She said Republicans believe putting more regulations on employers will actually harm women, and Congress should focus on creating jobs and growing the economy.
“I do not agree putting more government into this problem is going to solve it,” she said.
President Obama will to sign an executive order Tuesday to increase transparency among federal contractors and a procedural vote is expected in the Senate on the Paycheck Fairness Act.
“Through transparency, we can have an honest conversation, but many times women have no idea that they’re being discriminated against,” Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to the president, said on MSNBC. “There is a responsible role for government here.”
