MONROE, La. (AP) - Record rains over the weekend caused flooding throughout Monroe. City officials discussed Monday their long-term strategy for reducing such flooding in the future.

Mayor Jamie Mayo described the problem as a citywide concern because of Monroe’s location in a “bowl” that collects rainwater.

To combat the problem, The News-Star reports (https://tnsne.ws/1hXrWyc ) the city plans to build more pump stations and retention ponds to ease the strain on current infrastructure.

The retention pond, a $1.5 million project, will help flooding in the northern parts of Monroe.

City officials said funding has been secured through the statewide flood program. They’re in the process of acquiring rights of way and environmental permits.

Public Works Director Tom Janway did not have a timetable for when he hoped to complete the project.
