NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Longtime University of Oklahoma Provost Nancy Mergler says she will resign her administrative position this year so she can return to the classroom.

Mergler has served as OU senior vice president and provost for the Norman campus since 1995. Her resignation is effective June 1.

As the university’s chief academic officer, Mergler implemented a 10-year plan for increasing library resources, hired more than 80 faculty members for endowed positions and strengthened admission standards for undergraduates.

Mergler is a psychologist who first joined OU in 1987 as director of the university’s honors program, where she served for nearly 10 years.

OU President David Boren says he’ll recommend that Senior Vice Provost Kyle Harper be named interim provost and senior vice president.
