SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico’s highest court plans to consider a lawsuit seeking to remove Democratic Rep. Sandra Jeff of Crownpoint from the June primary election ballot.
The state Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing April 16 in a case brought by McKinley County resident Larry King with the assistance of an environmental group, Conservation Voters New Mexico.
King contends Jeff didn’t submit enough valid voter signatures on nominating petitions to qualify as a candidate. He’s appealing a Gallup judge’s decision to dismiss the case because Jeff didn’t get proper legal notice of the lawsuit.
Two other Democrats are running against Jeff, who’s sided with Republicans on several high profile legislative votes.
A district court in Santa Fe has been asked to stop the printing of ballots until the election challenge is resolved.
