GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Rosalynn Carter called fellow former first lady Betty Ford a “role model” during a visit to Grand Rapids on what would have been the late Mrs. Ford’s 96th birthday.
WXMI-TV says Carter took part Tuesday in a luncheon and panel discussion in honor of Ford, the wife of the late President Gerald Ford. She died in 2011.
Former President Jimmy Carter’s wife said she and Betty Ford promoted the ill-fated Equal Rights Amendment. According to The Grand Rapids Press, Rosalynn Carter called the ERA’s failure one of the biggest disappointments of her life.
She also praised Ford’s courage in discussing topics that were considered to be taboo at the time, including women’s health.
Carter says Ford “was a role model” for her and she admired “her speaking out about issues.”
