WASHINGTON, Mo. (AP) - Franklin County residents and other concerned citizens are getting another chance to comment on a planned coal ash landfill next to Ameren Missouri’s Labadie power plant.
The hearing is hosted by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall in the town of Washington. It will focus on the utility’s proposed solid waste disposal area construction permit.
The Missouri Public Service Commission heard testimony on the plan last week in Jefferson City.
Environmental groups fighting the project cite its potential to contaminate groundwater and its location in the Missouri River floodway. Ameren says its landfills have a protective liner and extensive groundwater monitoring equipment. The company says the landfill is needed as on-site coal ash storage ponds become full.
