WASHINGTON (AP) - The D.C. Council will consider a measure that would allow city residents to an elect an attorney general in November.
The bill from Council Chairman Phil Mendelson would put the office on the ballot for the first time during this year’s general election. It will be considered Tuesday by the council’s Committee of the Whole.
City voters approved a 2010 ballot measure that called for residents to elect their top attorney starting this year. The position is currently a mayoral appointment. But a divided council voted last year to postpone the election until 2018 amid concerns about a lack of candidates and confusion about the duties of the elected office.
The bill would allow any candidate who gathers the necessary petition signatures to appear on the November ballot.
