MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - It’s been a bumpy start to the tourism season along South Carolina’s Grand Strand thanks to the weather.
The Sun News reports (https://bit.ly/1oJb3MQ ) that the February ice storm and rainy weekends have affected the early tourism numbers. But when the weather cooperated, business wasn’t bad.
Chris Walker, president of the Oceanfront Merchants Association, says some Saturdays last month were almost as good as the summer.
Myrtle Beach is the heart of South Carolina’s $18 billion tourism industry. Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association president and CEO Stephen Greene says occupancy is improving with the return of more seasonal weather.
But he said early June could be slow depending on when schools in the Northeast and Midwest make up days missed because of last winter’s snowstorms.
