ATLANTA (AP) - Right-hander Cory Gearrin is joining the list of Braves pitchers having Tommy John surgery.
Gearrin confirmed Tuesday he will have the ligament-replacement surgery for his right elbow after he was injured late in spring training. Gearrin, a reliever who has 77 career appearances, says he has not yet scheduled the surgery or selected the doctor.
The Braves previously lost starting pitchers Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy to season-ending elbow injuries this spring. Each already has had his Tommy John surgery.
Gearrin was expected to serve in a setup role. He was 2-1 with a 3.77 ERA and one save in 37 games in 2013 in his first full season in Atlanta.
