MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A group of adoptive parents are speaking out against a Montgomery lawmaker’s claim that white parents do not adopt black or biracial children.
The parents organized a Facebook group called Faces of Families in Alabama and will hold a press conference Wednesday.
Beverly Owings of Wetumpka said the statement by Montgomery Rep. Alvin Holmes was offensive and false. She says they want to show the truth that there are many families who adopt across racial lines.
During debate on an abortion bill, Holmes said white lawmakers would want their daughters to abort mixed race grandchildren and he would bring a large sum of cash to anyone who could show him many whites who had adopted black children.
Owings said her youngest child, who is biracial, was hurt by Holmes’ remarks.
