A charity hockey game between New York City police and firemen came to chaos on Sunday as the two sides traded fists and blows in a game one watcher said reminded of old-timey NHL rivals.
“It was reminiscent of the old-time Rangers-Flyers games in the mid-70s,” said one New York Police Department officer who attended the Nassau Coliseum game, the New York Post reported. “I was waiting for [Philadelphia Flyers enforcer] Dave Schultz to come out on the ice.”
The fights erupted in the second period, when the score stood at 3-3.
A YouTube video of the fight included audio of the crowd chanting, “PD sucks, PD sucks.”
The game is an annual event, and for the past 20 years, has gone forth in relative peace. But Sunday’s brawl resulted in a 25-minute delay as referees struggled to determine who earned what penalties and who should be ejected, the New York Post reported. The game was ultimately won by NYPD players, 8-5.
