NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union is warning 138 New Jersey school districts that they could face legal action over requirements that they’re discriminating against students whose parents are in the country without legal permission.
At issue are requirements that parents provide Social Security numbers or photo IDs to enroll children in schools.
The ACLU’s New Jersey executive director Udi Ofer says the policies discourage some families from enrolling children, even if there’s no intent to discriminate.
The number of districts with policies that bother the ACLU is nearly exactly the same as it was in a 2008 analysis the group did.
The ACLU says it will consider suing districts that do not change their enrollment policies within four weeks.
