POLICE SAY 2-YEAR-OLD BOY SHOT 11-YEAR-OLD SISTER IN PHILADELPHIA
Police say the children and other siblings were playing with the gun. Jamara Stevens was fatally shot Saturday morning with a gun that police believe was brought into the home by the mother’s boyfriend a few hours earlier. Police say the children’s mother was using the bathroom at the time.
JURY TO BE PICKED TO DECIDE DEGREE OF GUILT FOR WOMAN WHO LEFT NEWBORN TO DIE IN SPORTS BAR RESTROOM
Amanda Hein, 27, has pleaded guilty to a general charge of criminal homicide. The jury must decide if she’s guilty of premeditated first-degree murder, which carries a life prison term, or third-degree murder, which carries up to 40 years in prison. Prosecutors say Hein gave birth at Starters Pub in Bethlehem in August, then wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag and hid him in a toilet tank.
PROSECUTORS EXPECTED TO UPGRADE CHARGES IN BATHTUB DROWNING CASE
Laurel Schlemmer is already jailed on charges she purposely drowned her 3-year-old son, Luke, in the bathtub of their suburban Pittsburgh home last week. Now that his 6-year-old brother, Daniel, has died of injuries in the same incident, Schlemmer is expected to be charged with homicide for his death, too.
TOMMY JOHN SURGERY TO END PIRATES PROSPECT’S SEASON BEFORE IT BEGINS
Right-hander Jameson Taillon (TY’-ahn), considered the Pittsburgh Pirates’ top pitching prospect, will miss this season and possibly part of next season with reconstructive surgery named for the first pitcher to have it.
