PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - About 30 volunteers from the Petersburg area and Fort Lee picked up trash along the Appomattox River as part of the national Project Clean Stream.

The volunteers collected trash on Saturday from Pocahontas Island to Ferndale Park in Dinwiddie.

Petersburg public works and utilities director Steven Hicks tells The Progress-Index (https://bit.ly/1huR4aV ) that the river itself isn’t very polluted. But he says there’s a large amount of trash along the river, including tires.

Petersburg spokeswoman Joanne Williams says the river is an asset to the city. Keeping the river clean encourages more people to come out and enjoy it.
