EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan State University education professor has helped survivors of the Rwandan genocide tell their stories through poetry.
The East Lansing school says Laura Apol has written “Requiem, Rwanda” based on workshops she led in the African nation to promote healing through writing. This month marks the 20th anniversary of the 100-day massacre that killed more than 500,000 people in 1994.
Apol returned to Rwanda numerous times to write her own poetry after the workshops concluded. The poems will be published by MSU Press in “Requiem, Rwanda,” Apol’s third published collection.
Apol says she wants her poetry “to convey the human side of genocide and recovery.” She adds that writing can help others “witness” history.
