COMMERCE CITY, Colorado (AP) - The U.S. women’s football team defeated China 2-0 in a friendly Sunday but it wasn’t enough for national team coach Tom Sermanni to keep his job.

Sermanni was sacked hours after Lauren Holiday and Megan Rapinoe scored to lead the Americans to victory.

The Americans held China to one shot on goal while running their unbeaten streak on home turf to 81 games, with 71 wins and 10 draws. Jill Ellis, the director of development for U.S. Soccer, will take over as interim coach when the team faces China again on Thursday.

After being hired in January 2013, Sermanni won 13 matches and drew three in his first year as coach. However, the Americans struggled at the Algarve Cup in Portugal last month, dropping two matches and finishing seventh.
