HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) - A southwestern Ohio sheriff is warning residents of a telephone scam where scammers pose as a sheriff’s deputy or an IRS agent.
Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones says at least two county residents were targeted recently. One scam involved a person posing as a deputy calling about complaints allegedly filed with the Department of justice over a debt. Another involved a person posing as an IRS Agent attempting to collect back taxes.
Authorities across the nation have reported similar calls.
Jones says both residents were threatened with arrest or jail time if the debts weren’t paid.
The sheriff says signs of a scam include instructions to “wire” money or purchase debit cards to settle a supposed debt.
He advises anyone suspecting a scam to call a local law enforcement agency.
