COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The City Council has appointed Martin Andrews as interim fire chief.

The Commercial Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/OdvDE1 ) Andrews had served as assistant chief.

He had been leading the department after Columbus Mayor Robert Smith announced the retirement of Chief Kenneth Moore on March 18. Moore had been chief since 2005; his last day on the job was March 31.

Under Moore’s leadership, the fire department became the first in Mississippi to receive national accreditation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

City attorney Jeff Turnage says recruitment of a permanent fire chief will begin by looking within the department. If the City Council agrees on a permanent chief from within the department’s ranks, there will be no national search, he says.

Andrews has been with the department since 1987.
