SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Police are investigating the death of an 11-year-old boy who was killed by a gunshot while he and a friend handled the weapon in west Savannah.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say a 12-year-old, who they described as a playmate, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a person under 18.

Police say the boys were handling a gun at a house on Church Street around 9 p.m. Friday when it fired.

Police said the 11-year-old, Montrez Burroughs, was pronounced dead at Memorial University Medical Center.

The 12-year-old was being held at a regional youth detention center as the investigation continued Saturday.
