DENVER (AP) - Charlie Blackmon’s day to remember against the Diamondbacks served as the latest reminder of Arizona’s tough start.
Blackmon went 6 for 6 and drove in five runs, leading the Colorado over Arizona 12-2 on Friday in the Rockies’ home opener.
Blackmon had a homer and three doubles in becoming the first player with six hits in a game against the Diamondbacks. Carlos Gonzalez tripled and homered to drive in four runs and Juan Nicasio pitched seven innings of one run ball as the Rockies sent Arizona lost its third straight to fall to 1-6 on the season, tying the worst start in Diamondbacks’ history.
“Game’s over now,” said Paul Goldschmidt, who extended his hitting streak to 26 games with an eighth-inning single. “You just go out tomorrow and play as hard as you can, and that’s what the guys will do.”
“We just haven’t played well enough. There have been mistakes made all over the place. These six, seven games, we just haven’t been able to put it together and we just need to do a little bit better job.”
Blackmon was at the center of the Diamondbacks’ latest struggles.
“He had a good day,” Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Blackmon. “It’s one he’ll never forget, I’m sure. You’ve got to give him credit. We’ll have to do something different with him than we did today.”
The Diamondbacks also lost third baseman Martin Prado in the sixth to a cut finger. His left index finger caught a spike from a sliding Blackmon, who was tagged out by Prado attempting to steal.
Gibson said Prado was day to day but was hopeful the third baseman would miss little or no time.
“He got spiked, pinned his finger against the bag,” Gibson said. “It just seems to be a slight laceration, nothing with the nail. Hopefully, he’ll be ready to go within a day or two.”
Gibson expressed more concern over early problems in the Diamondbacks’ rotation. Randall Delgado allowed six runs on 10 hits in four innings, his shortest outing in three career starts against the Rockies. The hit total was one shy of his career high.
“Got four innings from a guy yesterday and four innings today,” Gibson said. “We took the extra reliever (out of spring training). We’ve needed him. We need obviously a good start from (Brandon) McCarthy. He needs to go deep in the game for us get some of these guys rested up.”
Delgado said while he didn’t get the results he desired, he still felt pretty good about his outing.
“My first start of the year wasn’t like I wanted,” he said. “I threw some very good pitches. Maybe a few were up in the zone. But I felt like I threw the ball like I wanted.”
NOTES: Arizona 2B Aaron Hill finished 2 for 4 and is hitting .370 against Colorado in his career. It’s one of the highest marks among active players. … RHP McCarthy (0-0) will start Saturday for the Diamondbacks against Colorado and LHP Jorge De La Rosa (0-1). … OF Mark Trumbo had a solo homer in the fifth inning. In four career games at Coors Field, Trumbo has 3 homers and 9 RBIs.
