CAMP SMITH, N.Y. (AP) - A dozen members of the New York Army National Guard are gathering at a Hudson Valley training site to compete in a three-day military skills event.

The soldiers from across the state are competing starting Friday at Camp Smith, located on the Hudson River in the Westchester County town of Cortlandt, 45 miles north of New York City.

The Guardsmen are New York’s top enlisted soldiers and sergeants competing in the state’s Best Warrior event. The competition tests the soldiers’ physical fitness, military knowledge, endurance, marksmanship and land navigation skills.

Soldiers who win the New York event will go on to compete against other Army Guard members from other states to decide who will compete against representatives of the active Army and the Army Reserve.
