CHICAGO (AP) - A 25-year-old man accused of gunning down a 13-year-old boy in 2012 as the victim ate pizza with his sister at a Chicago restaurant has pleaded guilty to the charges.

Ivan Alanis was shot in the face as he ate with his sister and her friend and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (https://bit.ly/1harQ7p) Andre Alejandro on Thursday admitted to the shooting and received a 40-year sentence.

Authorities say Alejandro entered the pizzeria and yelled gang slogans. Investigators say the gunman left but returned with a handgun and fired several shots through the pizzeria’s open door. Alejandro apparently thought the three were rival gang members.

Ivan family said at the time of his death that he was not in a gang.
