JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A Jacksonville man has been sentenced to death for killing a man during a robbery.

A Duval County judge sentenced 44-year-old Rodney Newberry on Friday. A jury had previously convicted him of first-degree murder.

Authorities say Newberry shot 38-year-old Terrese Pernell 12 times with an AK-47 rifle while he and two other men were robbing him.

According to the Florida Times-Union (https://goo.gl/jYNGmL), the judge explained that Newberry deserved death because of his criminal record, which includes prior arrests for the attempted murder of two police officers.
