RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A longtime attorney on the North Carolina legislature’s nonpartisan staff will leave this summer after 37 years of working on bills, constitutional questions and other matters.

Gerry Cohen announced Friday he will retire Aug. 1. He was the General Assembly’s bill drafting director for 31 years and most recently held the title as special counsel. He’s considered the legislature’s expert on the state Constitution.

Cohen told colleagues by email that family illnesses and milestones need more of his attention, and it was getting harder to work long hours at the end of annual sessions.

Cohen says he’s enjoyed working with more than 900 lawmakers, drafting thousands of bills and looking for compromise and solutions.

The legislature begins its next work session in mid-May.
