HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A new playground named in honor of one of the Newtown school shooting victims is opening in Hartford.

The grand opening ceremony for the Ana Grace Marquez-Greene Playground in Elizabeth Park is set for 6 p.m. Friday, her birthday. Mayor Pedro Segarra and Ana’s parents, Jimmy Greene and Nelba Marquez-Greene, will be on hand.

Ana was one of 20 first-graders killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012. Six educators also died. The playground is one of 26 living memorials being built in region as part of the “Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play,” an effort led by a New Jersey firefighters’ association in response to the school shooting and Superstorm Sandy.

Ana’s playground is the 18th to be built in the project. Her parents grew up in Hartford.
