NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) - A judge in central New Jersey has sentenced the last defendant in a deadly unprovoked attack to 12 years in prison.

Steven Contreras was among five teenagers charged in the 2010 attack on Divyendu Sinha. Sinha was fatally beaten as he walked with his wife and two sons in Old Bridge. Prosecutors have said the five were looking for random victims to attack.

The Home News Tribune (https://mycj.co/1j9dx1n ) reports Contreras apologized to the Sinha family in court Thursday, saying it was the greatest mistake of his life.

Contreras pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault in exchange for testimony at the other defendants’ trials. Prosecutors said he lied on the stand.

Two defendants pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter and two others were convicted of simple assault.
