LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico State Police say a fatal accident involving a Dona Ana County sheriff’s deputy happened when the deputy lost control of her cruiser while on an emergency call and struck a 44-year-old woman walking on a highway shoulder.

State Police say Natividad Nunez of Mesquite was struck by Deputy Eden Terrazas’ patrol car Thursday night as Terrazas responded to a report of a vehicle matching the description of one tied to an Amber Alert.

According to the Las Cruces Sun-News (https://bit.ly/1dTyoa9 ), Terrazas’ car skidded across the highway and onto the shoulder after the deputy lost control. It hit a mailbox and a cattle guard before coming to rest partially in an irrigation canal.

The Sheriff’s Department says Terrazas is on standard administrative leave pending the State Police investigation.
